About This Project

LaBrassBanda was founded in 2007 by Stefan Dettl, Andreas Hofmeir, Manuel Winbeck, Oliver Wrage, and Manuel da Coll, who met during their music studies. Inspired by the Youngblood Brass Band’s blend of brass, hip-hop, and R&B, Dettl brought this influence back from a trip to New York City.

Their first concert was in London, and during the 2008 European football championship, they performed on a trailer at various fan zones, with their biggest gig in Vienna at the final. They also played at Munich’s ‘Bavaria Open.’ In 2009, the Goethe-Institut invited them to the German Culture Festival sibSTANCIJA_09 in Novosibirsk, with further concerts in Omsk, Krasnoyarsk, and Moscow. That year, they also performed at the Harare International Festival of Arts in Zimbabwe and the Roskilde Festival.

Between 2010 and 2012, LaBrassBanda played over 500 concerts and festivals, including the Hurricane and Southside Festivals, and gigs in Russia, Bosnia, and Denmark. Their goal is to make Volksmusik suitable for clubs.

In 2013, they participated in the national pre-selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. Although they didn’t win, it boosted their popularity. That summer, they opened for Die Ärzte at several concerts.

LaBrassBanda’s genre is “Neue Volksmusik,” blending brass, reggae, punk, gypsy, jazz, and techno with a Bavarian twist. Dettl and Winbeck sing in Bavarian, often about beer, girls, and partying.

Known for their unique attire, the band performs barefoot, in Lederhosen and T-shirts. In 2013, Oliver Wrage left the band for personal reasons, and Andreas Hofmeir departed in 2014 after winning the ‘Classic-Echo.’ Hofmeir now has solo projects and is a professor at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Dettl released two solo albums, “Rockstar” in 2011 and “Summer of Love” in 2012, where he plays guitar instead of trumpet. New members Mario Schönhofer (bass), Jörg Hartl (trumpet), Korbinian Weber (trumpet), Tobias Weber (percussion), and Stefan Huber (tuba) joined in 2013 and 2014.
